Operation Christmas Child is one of the ministries in which everyone in our church participates, whether through financial donations, donating items, preparation, packing, or prayer for the boxes to have a lasting impact on the children that receive them. When November rolls around it is all hands on deck.
We start gathering items for this amazing ministry towards the end of October and the beginning of November. We collect hygiene items such as toothbrushes, washcloths, bars of soap, hairbrushes, hair accessories, and nail clippers, just to name a few. Also, clothing items like socks, shoes, sandals, underwear, t-shirts, and similar items like these go into the boxes as well. Sewing kits, scissors, notebooks, water bottles, and art supplies are also added, but most importantly as any child would tell you, are the TOYS! Hot Wheels, Barbies, stuffed animals, dolls, and toys like these are added to each box. It is said that if you have a soccer ball you have a friend, so soccer balls are great toys to add to the boxes as well!
The boxes have three age groups you can choose from, and you pick whether you are packing one for a boy or a girl. We encourage our church members to pack boxes on their own if they choose or they can bring items in or donate financially to the endeavor. Our Friends Women group designates a day for packing them and everyone who is able is encouraged to come and join in. This year we packed and shipped 80 boxes total!
