At our March 2 gathering of the Church Leadership Institute, we will be very privileged to have Doug Shoemaker as our teacher in the course, The Personal Life of the Leader. As Superintendent of Indiana Yearly Meeting, Doug is a pastor to pastors and other church leaders, and therefore a counselor and mentor to many in their spiritual, emotional, and physical health. He is committed to help us find ways to give greater care to and enrich our personal and spiritual lives as church leaders.
Doug Shoemaker has been Superintendent of Indiana Yearly Meeting since February, 2005, after having been a pastor for fourteen and one-half years at Westfield Friends Meeting and for twelve years at Hemlock Friends Meeting. Doug was recorded as a Friends Minister in Indiana Yearly Meeting in 1980. He received the Bachelor’s degree and Master of Christian Ministry degree from Huntington University. Doug is married to Kris, and they are the parents of three lovely children: Kyle, Adam, and Kelsie. Both as pastor and superintendent Doug has ministered to numerous Friends leaders and has great wisdom to share with us about the care of our personal and family lives.
The Leadership Institute serves many Friends across Yearly Meetings. Institute locations where live, interactive sessions occur are: Bangor Liberty Friends Church, North Newton (at the home of Merl and Eunice Kinser), Lighthouse Friends Church (at the home of Jerry and Mary Louthan), Fowler Friends Church, Arkansas City Friends Church (at the home of Bud Lawrence), Friends Ministry Center (Wichita), Northwest Friends Church (at the home of Tom and Bonnie Bousman), Faith Friends Church, Friends Community Church (Angleton), Barclay College (Jackson Hall). YouTube videos of the Institute sessions are viewed at Pratt Friends Church and Vancouver Friends Church. Other sites where the Institute has been held, and where the technology for viewing is available, include: Miami Friends Church, Booker Friends Church, Chandler Friends Church, Hesper Friends Church, Sudanese Community Church (Omaha), and Iglesia Amigos (San Antonio).
As Jesus cared for His own spiritual and physical needs by withdrawing regularly for prayer and rest to be strengthened for ministry, so we, too, as church leaders, need to care for our spiritual and physical health needs to be more fully able to carry out the ministry Christ expects of us. Doug will be a counselor to us in this high goal. I hope to see you at the Institute Monday, March 2, 2015, 7:00 central time, 6:00 mountain time. In the meantime let us meditate on Jesus’ invitation, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31).
