Dear Friends in the Church Leadership Institute for Ministry,
We are very blessed to have Kevin Mortimer as our teacher at the Leadership Institute on March 7. His topic will be “Friends Beliefs in the Teachings of Robert Barclay.” Robert Barclay, in his Apology, was the first Friend to write systematically about Friends beliefs. Kevin Mortimer, who is doing his Ph.D. studies in the beliefs of Robert Barclay, is well prepared to share with us Barclay’s clear articulation of our historic Friends beliefs.
Kevin was born into the Valton, Wisconsin Friends Church, in Iowa Yearly Meeting. He earned the B.A. degree from Barclay College and the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry from Friends University. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Birmingham and is writing his dissertation on the beliefs of Robert Barclay. He was recorded as a Friends Minister in Evangelical Friends Church-Mid America Yearly Meeting (EFC-MAYM). He has served as Youth Pastor in Northridge Friends Church and Pastor of Langham Creek Friends Church, EFC-MAYM, and Middle River Friends Church, Iowa Yearly Meeting. He has also served as General Superintendent of Iowa Yearly Meeting, during which time he was on the General Board of Friends United Meeting. He is currently Chair of the Missions Department at Barclay College, where, as Professor, he teaches courses in Missions, Bible, and Theology. He has also taught in the Barclay College Master of Arts studies. Kevin is married to Gayle, and they have two lovely daughters.
We want Friends to have easy access to our Institute classes, so we offer them at several locations in Yearly Meetings, both in Evangelical Friends Church International and Friends United Meeting. We currently have sites at: Bangor Liberty Friends Church, Fowler Friends Church, Lighthouse Fellowship Church (at the home of Jerry and Mary Louthan), Faith Friends Church, Friends Ministry Center (Wichita), Friends Community Church (Angleton), Barclay College (Jackson Hall), Noatak, Alaska (Robert Sheldon, Superintendent), Friends Bible Training School (Alaska Yearly Meeting) at the home of David Miller, Neighborhood Friends Church (at the home of Tom and Bonnie Bousman), North Newton (at the home of Merl and Eunice Kinser), and Arkansas City Friends Church (at the home of Bud Lawrence). Other sites where the Institute has been held, and where the technology for viewing is available, include: Miami Friends Church, Booker Friends Church, Chandler Friends Church, Hesper Friends Church, Sudanese Community Church (Omaha), and Iglesia Amigos (San Antonio). Maybe you would like to hear the presentations at a different time. You may prefer to gather a group together at the time and location of your choice and view video recorded sessions on YouTube HERE. We thank Drew Davenport, who uploads the videos each month. Vancouver Friends Church and Pratt Friends Church have used the video recorded sessions for their churches in the past.
Whether you are new to the Friends Church or have spent your life among Friends, you will want to hear what Kevin Mortimer has to share about our Friends faith on Monday evening, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. central time.
Eagerly looking forward to our fellowship together,
– Dave Kingrey, Director of Leadership Institute
