Please pray for peace in Burundi. We keep hearing updates from the Burundi Friend’s Legal Representative, Domitien Sabongerwa, that Burundi’s political security is in jeopardy. We have heard reports from Friends leaders in Rwanda that a few thousand refugees from Burundi have already entered Rwanda.
We learned from Domitien yesterday, Tuesday, April 28, that public demonstrations and unrest have begun over the past three days. Many schools and public services are not functioning at this time. Friends spent special time in prayer at Rohero Church yesterday in Bujumbura. So far there are reports of 2 civilians killed and more than 20 policemen injured. There are reports of people leaving their homes in Bujumbura , but so far we haven’t heard any news like this for any area “upcountry.” Church leaders of several denominations are meeting to talk about ways they might peacefully influence the situation.
Domitien reports that there is continued disagreement, particularly around terms of presidential elections. There is a series of elections coming up: local government and parliament elections scheduled for May 26, presidential elections June 26, and further national elections in July.
Thanks for your ongoing prayers,
– Matt Macy, Associate Director of Evangelical Friends Mission
